" In the backdrop of economic globalization, multinational corporations (MNCs) from Europe, Japan, the USA, NIEs, and recently from emerging economies have made remarkable investment and business expansion to the countries of East, Southeast, and South Asia. These countries have adopted various measures to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and host MNCs. Those include enactment of FDI laws and regulations, establishment of free trade zones, industrial estates, and bonded zones, introduction of diversified fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, membership in various international trade and investment regulating bodies, and ratification of cross national investment treaties and agreements, and implementation of deregulatory measures. They today account for about 15-25 percent of the world aggregate inward FDI
One very important aspect of MNCs business expansion to this continent is that, while doing capital investment they not only bring their technologies but also management practices even though the socio-cultural, market, and political environments are different from those in their home countries. As such they adopt diversified policies and strategies to achieve their business objectives, and constantly maneuver to adjust and remodel their strategies to comply with changes in host countries as well as global business environments
In view of the above situation, this course will address several key questions and issues as follows. What entry/ advancement strategies MNCs of different nationalities adopt for Asia? What styles and strategies do they implement for business operation here? How do they formulate their management structures, strategies, and systems to fit into the cultural molds of the host countries? Given the different national origins of MNCs, do they frame alternative strategies etc. for different host countries? How do operational practices (production, personnel, and marketing) of MNCs from different origins differ or coincide within the same host country? And to what extent MNCs try to localize their home practices in host countries
For the last few years, changes such as Asian Currency Crisis of 1997, regional and global IT revolution, and more recently Chinaユs membership in WTO and terrorist attack on WTC in the USA have brought up new challenges for MNCs operating in Asia. We will examine how these have affected MNCs and influenced their long-and short-term business policies and practices
It is expected that students will participate in the course activities in different ways (presentation, debate, and discussion on assigned topics, and writing semester-end assignment). The study materials will include articles/papers from journals of professional/academic societies, chapters of books, and several case studies. A detailed list will be announced in the first class of the academic year"
