講義内容 The goals of Communication in English are to continue the progress made in Oral Communication classes toward active use of English, positive learning attitudes, learning to learn, and fluency in interpersonal communications, as well as to expand the students' capabilities toward more transactional language use.
講義計画 Communication in English will reinforce Oral Communication learning through recycling first-year activities as well as having students give presentations and speeches in small and large groups, practice negotiation and persuasion skills, as well as seminar-style questioning and discussion. Students will work both with textbooks and other materials distributed by the teacher, and with audio and video tapes in the classroom.
Language Lab (LL): In each 90-minute Communication in English class, 45 minutes will be spent in the language laboratory with the emphasis on various aspects of listening comprehension, note-taking, and pronunciation using commercially prepared listening and video courses as well as actual television broadcasts and movies. Tests, homework, and attendance in the LL are combined with results in the Communication section to determine the course grade.
評価方法 Because Communication in English is an active course, attendance is extremely important. Students' participation and preparation are evaluated informally in every class. Regular language laboratory tests are given throughout the year. Individual instructors give tests based upon their texts, handouts, and activities. Students are given grades based upon their attendance, participation, amount of work done, and progress made. They are also asked to make self-evaluations and to give feedback on the course to the teachers. Homework and preparation are required and students can expect to spend about three hours outside of class for homework per week.
