副題	Lord of the Flies, William Golding
講義内容	Published in 1954, this novel quickly became a favorite among students (it's an exciting adventure story, written in fairly easy-to-understand English) as well as literary critics (who have a great many ideas about what kind of novel it really is). The narrative is rather simple. A group of boys is marooned on a desert island. Lacking adult supervision, they begin to make their own rules of behavior. We then see the consequences of this. With this basic plot, Golding is able to ask some fundamental questions about man's basic nature. More than anything, the novel challenges us to reflect on who we are and what we must do, or, better, not do to remain a true human being.
講義計画	The lectures each week take up about one hour. During this time, the teacher will explain the contents of the chapters being studied that particular week. Following this there is group discussion. Small groups of three or four students talk about the reflections and questions that they have written as homework for those particular chapters.
評価方法	There will be weekly homework assignments, plus an essay at the end of the semester.
