副題 Contemporary American Poetry
This course presents the work of American poets of the last half century. We will read poems by eleven American women poets. Because poems and songs share many qualities, including rhyme, rhythm, and the use of images, we will also consider the poetry of American songwriters. Before class every week, students will read and answer questions about one or two poems by poets such as Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Adrienne Rich. During class, the teacher will lecture about poetry and the poet, and students will discuss the poem. Also, each week students will listen to and discuss the poetic qualities of one popular song in English. The lectures will be in English, but students will be able to discuss the poems in Japanese in small groups.

Class 1: Introduction; 2: Gwendolyn Brooks; 3: Maya Angelou; 4: Sylvia Plath; 5: Adrienne Rich; 6: Nellie Wong; 7: Lucille Clifton; 8: Audre Lorde and Judith Ortiz Cofer; 9: Rita Dove; 10: Janice Mirikitani; 11: Joy Harjo and Ai; 12: In class presentations.
Class grade will be based on enthusiasm and effort in class (30%); on completion of the homework writing and reading assignments (30%); one presentation (20%); and one final report (20%). Because much of our work will be done in class, it is necessary for you to come to class and participate. Too many absences will affect your grade.
Students will receive handouts containing the poems and notes about analyzing poetry.
