The words that we most often associate with creative writing are “story,”“poetry,”and“drama.”But learning to write creatively can make any kind of writing−from academic papers to New Year's cards−more colorful, expressive, and interesting.
With this in mind, Creative Writing intends to give students several opportunities to expand their skills and interests in expressing themselves more vividly and descriptively in English. Though we will focus on the popular genres of short story, poetry, and drama, other types of writing may also be explored. Students will discover how becoming more familiar with literary concepts such as symbol, metaphor, plot, and point of view and writing processes such as brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing can contribute to becoming a more creative writer. They will also discover that creative writing can be enjoyable and satisfying.
Classes will be conducted in English using a mixture of short lecture, discussion, creative writing activities, and student presentations. Because success in writing creatively depends greatly on our ability to remove inhibition and “open up our creative selves,” students will be asked to assist in creating a friendly, relaxed, and supportive atmosphere in and outside of the classroom. After all, it is through the courage to share ideas and writing with others, that a student can discover his or her own creative voice.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on a portfolio of creative writing, a creative writing journal, and enthusiasm and effort in class. Since assignments are related to class activities, it is essential that you come to class on time and participate fully. Each absence will reduce your grade, those students having more than 3 absences being unable to receive credit.
