講義計画 Researchers of popular culture study famous people, pop singers, fads, best-selling, cartoon characters, and trends. The subject matter may seem unimportant, but the question asked is very serious. What is the meaning of life in America? The seminar begins with an attempt to define culture itself. After an overview of immigration to America, we will consider popular culture media that have made an impact within the past hundred years: journalism; advertising; best selling fiction; recorded music; film radio; television; and the internet. Students will read materials in English, prepare notes, and do a small project for each class meeting. They will write two brief reports giving overviews of a popular medium, such as advertising, newspapers, or popular fiction; and will write a longer report focusing on a particular form within a larger medium (for example, a study of cosmetics advertising, an analysis of an American newspaper or magazine, or a discusison of a best-selling novel). The overall goal of the seminar is to equip students with the skills necessary to identify, describe, and analyze the amazing culture around us.

評価方法 Seminar grades will be based on enthusiasm and effort in class (20%); on completion of the homework reading and writing assignments (30%); two presentations (20%); and one final report (30%). Because much of our work will be done in class, it is necessary for you to come to class and participate. Too many absences will lower your grade.
