副題 | Seminar I: Toshio Mori, Japanese American Writer |
講義内容 | |
講義計画 | Toshio Mori’s stories of the Issei and Nisei offer a rare picture of Japanese immigrants and their descendants in America during the years 1920-1940. These are not only sensitive portraits of ordinary people but also reflections on how to deal with life. His works will be the center of the seminar study. The text will be Unfinished Message. To put his works in the context of American Literature as well as to get used to the devices of plot, characters, place, and narration in fiction, the first part of the seminar will look at several short stories and poems. These have been selected to illustrate how fiction presents its theme. The text, Journeys through American Literature will also be used in Seminar II since it provides exercises and helps in writing about literature. |
評価方法 | The evaluation is based on class presentations (35%), presence and participation (35%) and a short paper developed from one of the presentations (30%). |
