講義題目	Evelyn Waugh's Evaluation of English Culture and Religion

講義内容	The year 1930 stands as a kind of demarcation line neatly dividing two decades: the aestheticism and playful levity of the twenties and the new seriousness of the thirties. We want to read closely two representative novels by Evelyn Waugh, Decline and Fall(1928) and Brideshead Revisited(1945) in order to understand this division and to see how they reflect Waugh's thoughts about English culture and the situation of religion during this time. Also, in order to broaden our knowledge of what is happening in the period between the wars, we will take a look at such themes as the search for belief in a worthy cause, the move from certainty to uncertainty, and the anxiety over which group or -ism to join: Catholicism, Marxism, or Fascism. For ths purpese, information by way of prints from the writings of several respectable writers at that time --- George Orwell, Christopher lsherwood, Graham Greene, Rex Warner, Edward Upward, and Stephen Spender --- will be provided.
講義計画
評価方法	There will be weekly reports. Also, eath member of the seminar will evaluate one critical article about Waugh during each term. There will also be a final essay.
