講義内容	詩、小説、エッセイなど、アメリカ文学の具体的な作品を取り上げて、文学作品の形式と主題の分析方法を学ぶと同時に、文学とエスニシティの関係について考える。アフリカ系、イタリア系、アイルランド系、中国系、日系などのエスニック・グループの体験が文学にどのように表象されているかを作品に即して具体的に分析する一方で、こうしたエスニック・グループを取り巻く歴史的、社会的、文学的状況と関連づけて、文学を多元的に読む方法を修得することを目指す。
講義計画	This course makes use of history, sociology, and literature to investigate how peoples give voice to their struggle to make a living within a mixture of cultural influences. The emphasis will be on immigrants in America, the neighborhood novel as the basis. Literatures in English dealing with similar themes, e.g. Obasan (Canada) will be added though student presentations that introduce novels or movies (such as “The House of Sand and Fog”). 　The class will consist of lecture, class discussion, and student presentations. Depending upon the previous studies of the students, the lecture will concentrate either on the textbook material or on the novels and videos that are mentioned in the text. Among the writers to be considered are: Toshio Mori, Kyoko Mori, Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, Bernard Malamud, Chaim Potok, John Edgar Wideman, and Toni Morrison.
評価方法	Grades will be determined by class participation, one's presentation and a final examination.
