授業概要	文学の特質は、人間が問い続けてきた存在の謎や多様な人間の行動を一つの物語の枠に収め、言葉の魔術的な効果によって我々に未知の世界・心理を体験させることにある。　この講義は、英米文学の小説を取り上げ、様々の要素（プロット、性格描写、象徴、主題、作者の視点など）が、いかに組み合わされ、一つの作品世界が造形されているかを明らかにすると同時に、文学作品の熟練した読みが人生への洞察を拡げ・深めることを明らかにする。
学修目標	This course will introduce reading fiction and give students practice in reading and writing in English.
授業計画	This course on the novel stresses setting (where the action takes place) , progress of the plot, ethnic backgrounds of the characters, author's themes, and interdisciplinary approaches to the novel. The teacher will lecture in English for fifteen minutes on the material assigned from the textbook. After fifteen minutes there will be small-group discussion and questions to the teacher. Then the teacher will continue to lecture for another fifteen minutes, etc. At times video will be used to show the experiences of people of Japanese ancestry in America. 　The following writers have been selected for study : １. Yoshiko Uchida　２. Hisaye Yamamoto　３. Monica Sone　４. John Okada　５. Joy Kogawa　６. Wakako Yamauchi　７. Toshio Mori　８. David Masumoto. The stories are in English ; some of the introductory material for the stories and explanations in the textbook are in Japanese. The course will be conducted in English.
評価方法	The grade will be based upon: 1) class attendance, 2) written work done in class (quizzes and reflections) , 3) Mid-term and Final examinations. It is expected that the students read the assigned material before the class so they will have some idea of what the teacher is talking about.
