授業概要 | This seminer is an introduction to colonial and postcolonial studies. Colonial and postcolonial studies is an interdisciplinary field (the underlying rationale of the Eibeigakka program) that includes: history, society, literature and art, culture, political science, gender studies, religion, economics, and many more. The seminar will focus on Joyce Cary and Chinua Achebe. Cary and Achebe have never met, but their names are often linked together in discussions of Literature and the British Empire. That is because their novels form a dialogue about colonialism. Cary's representations of Africa, Africans, and colonialism were once widely accepted by Western readers as real. However, as a university student in Nigeria, Achebe read and disliked the way Cary represented Africans and African Life. He decided someone had to write back to Cary, correcting Cary's misrepresentations. |
学修目標 | We will read Mister Johnson and Things Fall Apart. (We will also watch a 1991 film version of Mister Johnson). As we read we will pay attention to what each reveals about: sBritish colonial history and policy in Africa sWestern attitudes and misconceptions about Africa and Africans sthe consequences for Britain and the British people of empire straditional African life and culture sthe experience and consequences of colonization for African peoples and their cultures. |
