授業概要 The purpose of this course is to encourage students to consider and analyse certain issues and their relevance to modern society, as well as their own role in both reflecting and influencing modern society. It will feature a number of general themes or modules for analysis and discussion, dealing, for example, with aspects of education, women in the workplace, gender discrimination, modern romance and the greying of society. Journalism, film, TV documentaries, short stories, poetry, art and music will be used to review and complement the issues under discussion, and as the majority of participants are expected be female, there will be some bias toward a woman's perspective in presenting and considering these issues.
学修目標 It is hoped that this course will not only acquaint the students with a number of pertinent social issues but that it will encourage them to develop their ability to analyse the topics under review and to respond critically to them in discussion. It is also intended that spoken and written styles of discourse will benefit from occasional reviews of topic-related lexical items.
授業計画 Students will be expected to prepare for class by reading the texts provided by the instructor, and occasionally, by producing materials for use in class. Throughout the course, students will be invited to give informed and well-presented opinions through both discussion and a number of written assignments. Students may be asked to suggest topics for discussion, and to help in produce materials for use by the rest of the class. It is hoped that the course will develop the ability to analyse and respond critically to the various materials used to encourage discussion of the topics under review. It is also intended that spoken and written expressions of opinion will benefit from reviewing topic-related vocabulary exercises.
評価方法 Students will be graded on the following course requirements:
regular, punctual class attendance;
conscientious class preparation and participation;
three to four 500 word essays to be turned in related to selected course topics;
and a final examination(essay format).
Participants who fall short of fulfilling all of these requirements will be unable to receive a final grade.
テキスト No purchase of any text is necessary for this course: printed materials will be provided by the instructor.
