授業概要 The Humanities are a group of subjects concerning human thought and communication. The subjects include philosophy, religion, literature, language, and art. In this course we will look at humanities by focusing on the works of one American Southern writer, Flannery O'Connor. For example Hans Vaihinger's The Philosophy of 'As If' shows how this way of thinking ("as if" it were so) guides many people and how Flannery O'Connor's use is quite the opposite. The religious idea of "Incarnation," God becoming a human being, is a model for O'Connor's use of material things to express an inner, spiritual reality. Cultural studies of tattoos and the shaman parallel O'Connor's treatment of her characters' search for meaning in life. O'Connor uses the peacock and the automobile as symbols of a materialistic society.
