副題 Viewing (and Reading) Elspeth Huxley's The Flame Trees of Thika: The Discourses of Colonialism
授業概要 The Flame Trees of Thika, Elspeth Huxley's fictionalized memoirs of her childhood on a settler farm in Kenya, was originally published 1959. When it was made into a 7-part mini-series by Thames Television in 1981 the governments of Kenya and Zambia (two former settler colonies) registered their protests, seeing the program as an attempt to justify the colonial past. In this class we will view (and read) portions of this work and discuss how it is representative of a colonial discourse.
学修目標 The students will be introduced to the notion of discourse as a shared set of assumptions, ideas, beliefs, values, and rules that govern the ways in which we view, understand, and describe the world around us. We will specifically apply this notion to the situation of colonialism and examine how discourse defines the ways in which colonized peoples and cultures are viewed and affected by colonizing cultures.
授業計画 Class time will be divided among teacher presentation and student discussion, with some time devoted to viewing episodes of The Flames Trees of Thika relevant to the topics under consideration.
評価方法 Grades will be determined by attendance, participation in and contribution to discussions, occasional quizzes on the assigned reading, and either a final report assignment or a written examination(the latter yet to be determined).
