講義題目 Flannery O'Connor's Use of Imagery
開講キャンパス
授業概要 This course will treat Flannery O'Connor as an American Southern writer from the prospective of the social problems of her time. Usually, O'Connor, following Hawthorne, felt that human problems could not be solved by law but by changing one's mind and heart. However, modern readers, attracted by her style, are interested in how her appeals to mind and heart include a good deal of social realism and criticism.
学修目標 The purpose of this course will be to look at O'Connor's essays, letters, and stories to see what she has to say about the social situation and issues of her day. On the students' side, the purpose will be to have each scan the same material from a different perspective and thus appreciate the different levels of interpretation there are in a piece of literature.
授業計画 As a graduate course, the emphasis will be on several books of literary criticism as well as the primary sources of O'Connor's works themselves. 1. Use of Biblical, anthropological, urban imagery. 2. Social issues of the day ---- Cold War, race, post-war changes in the South. 3. Focus on the letters. 4. Focus on the essays. 5. Relate items 1-4 to several stories and the novel Wise Blood.
評価方法 Grades will be assigned according to class participation and final written report.
