講義題目 Evelyn Waugh: The Early Novels
開講キャンパス
授業概要 Waugh's early novels are usually seen as his best work, showing what is perhaps his most dominant personal characteristic, his ascetic tendency to criticize whatever he dislikes. The novels are also a window to English life in the 1920s and 30s. To understand his approach, we will read Vile Bodies (1930) and Black Mischief (1932) in the first semester, and A Handful of Dust (1934) and Scoop (1938) in the second.
学修目標 By comparing Waugh's style, techniques, and aims with those of two other writers, Jonathan Swift and Lewis Carroll, we hope to clarify what Waugh was trying to do in these early works. Throughout the course, background information will be provided by way of prints.
授業計画 Our plan is to deepen our knowledge of satire by comparing and contrasting these three writers.
評価方法 There will be weekly reports. Also, members of the seminar will evaluate one critical article about each novel. A final five-page essay is required at the end of each semester.
テキスト All the novels are published by Penguin. We will use the latest editions.
