【授業概要】

本科目では、明確で説得力のある英語ビジネス文書を作成するのに必要な技能について学ぶ。Eメール、ファックス、フォーマルなビジネスレター等さまざまなタイプのビジネス文書について指導し、これらを作成する。 また、これらのビジネス文書の標準書式について考察し、ビジネス文書で頻繁に使用される言葉と決まり文句についても議論する。 時間が許せば、学生の希望に応じてより創造的なビジネスライティングに関するプロジェクトを実施する。本科目は英語を母語としない学生のみ対象に開講される。(講義は英語で行われます。)

【到達目標】

         When students have completed this course, they should be able to plan, write, evaluate, revise, and rewrite their own business correspondence and business proposals. They will become familiar with the vocabulary and the structures that are essential to formal business writing.

【授業計画】

 

1.         Introduction to the course.

         - Students and teacher self-introductions.

         - Explanation of goals and content of course.

         - The Four C’s of Business Writing.

2.         Survey of textbook

- Preview overall contents of text.

- Preview in further detail the units in the text that we will cover in class.

- Written activity to familiarize students with contents and organization of text.

                   - Essential vocabulary of business writing.

3.         Format and elements of business correspondence:

- The layout of business letters: block style, semi-block style, and indented.

- The parts of a business letter: addresses, date, opening, body, closing.

                    Business letter: Requesting a service

- Introduce letters requesting a service.

- Making polite requests.

- Students begin writing in class a Letter requesting a service.

4.         The process of writing:

-Introduction to the steps of the writing process.

                   - Process writing in business: Why and When?

- Discussion of “Letters requesting a service.”

5.         The process of writing: Preparation and planning of your written work.

 Business fax: Ordering supplies

- Writing the cover page when faxing an order for supplies.

6.         Business e-mail: Requesting information.

- Why and when we request information.

                   - Who do you contact?

- Make your request specific.

7.         The process of writing: Checking your work

- Reviewing your letter before you send it.

                   - Evaluating your own written work.

- Rewriting

8.         Business letter: Requesting information, Part II

- Write a letter requesting information on a product advertised in a business magazine or newspaper.

9.         Business letter: Requesting information, Part II

- Peer-evaluation, revision, and rewriting.

10.      Business letter: Writing letters of complaint

- Explanation of letters of complaint

                   - Class discussion: When does one write a letter of complaint?

                   - Maintaining the proper tone in letters of complaint

- In-classs assignment: Begin writing letter of complaint

11.      Writing a business proposal:

- Introduction to assignment

                   - Freewrite on a business idea

- Class discussion and exchange of ideas

12.      Business letter: Responding to letters of complaint

- Keeping your clients happy

                   - Maintaining an apologetic tone

- In-class assignment: Begin writing a letter of complaint

13.      Writing a business proposal:

- Evaluating

14.      Wrap up, course evaluation, self-evaluation.

 

【評価方法】

75% of the grade will be based on the written homework assignments.

25% of the grade will be based on the effort students put into class. This could include attendance, punctuality, punctuality in handing in assignments, and following directions.
