Students will have the opportunity to discuss, debate and learn about a wide range of topics, in a relaxed environment. We will look at international issues (Middle East, North Korea, the environment, global warming, and Japan's role in the world) as well as a few topical social issues affecting Japan these days (crime, poverty, drugs etc). These topics will be combined with a look at some personal issues (honesty, responsibility, prejudices, love) and some lighter topics such as movies and music. Combined with the learning of vocabulary and different ways to express one's self, students will be involved in various activities designed to help further their ability to converse in English on unfamiliar as well as familiar topics.

Pair and group activities to give you the opportunity to practice your spoken English (trying to communicate is more important than the perfection of what you say). Individual listening, and short reading activities either preceded or followed by comparative interaction with your fellow students. The textbook English Upgrade 3 will be used on alternate weeks, and on the other week other materials either related to topics in Upgrade 3 or materials that hopefully will make you more interested in using English. Most of the other materials will be based around authentic (real) English; songs, film and TV clips, and commercials.

The class will focus on developing conversation strategies to be used in group discussions. Students will develop listening and speaking skills, while discussing contemporary social topics. Students will also give presentations based on information taken from English language mass media sources.

Students will research a variety of topics and present their findings to their own small group. The course will focus on individual responsibility for researching a topic, presenting it to a small audience (3-4 students) of peers and responding to any questions. Students will also evaluate their peers' presentations and provide constructive feedback. This will take place in a micro-group so the students can develop confidence in a supportive environment and build their presentation skills in English at the same time as developing writing, speaking and listening skills.
評価方法 Instructors will provide a detailed grading policy in their syllabus which will be distributed on the first day of class.
テキスト Textbooks and other required materials will be listed in the course syllabus distributed by the instructor on the first day of class.
