The Empire Writes Back: Chinua Achebe and Colonial Encounter in Africa
講義内容 This seminar is an introduction to colonial and postcolonial studies. Colonial and postcolonial studies is an interdisciplinary field (the underlying rationale of the Eibeigakka program) that includes: history, society, literature and art, culture, political science, gender studies, religion, economics, and many more.
We will focus on the writings of Chinua Achebe, one of the most prominent contemporary novelists writing in English. He is also among the first generation of African writers to produce literary works that make use of European languages and literary forms. Some have called him the Father of modern African literature. As we read we will be particularly interested in how his representations of Africa differ from those of non-African writers such as Joseph Conrad and Joyce Cary. We will also pay attention to what they reveal about traditional life and culture, contemporary Nigerian society, and the experience and consequences of colonization for African peoples and their cultures in both the colonial state and the postcolonial nation.
学修目標 In Seminar II we will read Achebe’s, highly novel, Things Fall Apart. As we read we will pay attention to what each reveals about:
sBritish colonial history and policy in Africa
sWestern attitudes and misconceptions about Africa and Africans
   straditional African life and culture
sthe consequences of Empire for the people of African
