副題 Types of Novels
This course will focus on the various types of novels written in English: the picaresque novel, the novel of the hero's maturation, the artistic novel, the colonial novel, the modernist novel, and so on. In order to understand more clearly the contents of the works we will read, a good amount of background material will be given. The purpose of this course is to help the students learn about various types of novels (epistolary, picaresque, historical, autobiographical, realistic, romantic, artistic, etc.). We will also spend some time learning how to analyze a particular literary work. Students will also learn terms used in literary analysis, such as point of view, genre, allegory, stream of consciousness, epiphany, climax, denouement, simile, metaphor, etc. Sufficient historical and biographical information will be provided so that the students can understand the basic underpinnings of the works we will study. We will read all or sections of the following works: The Miller's Tale・Wuthering Heights; Jane Eyre; Great Expectations; Tess of the D'Urbervilles; The Dead; Howard's End; The Kugelmas・Episode・ The Third Man.
