The Narnia Stories, by C. S. Lewis |
講義内容 |
Outline of the Course: We will read two novels by C. S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Magician's Nephew. On the surface, these are rather easy novels to read. However, we want to look deeper into the meaning of the books so as to discover Lewis's ideas about myth and fairy tales, as well as to learn more about his use of the Bible and his literary techniques. Besides giving the students sufficient background information about Lewis's life, I would like to show the relationship between these two novels, some of his other works, and several other writers who were using the same genre in their own works. |
学修目標 |
Aim and Purpose of the Course: The students will learn how to examine a literary work critically, that is to say, how to analyze the novels with a questioning eye, studying the author's purpose and how well he achieves his purpose. |
