講義内容 The purpose of this course is to encourage participants to analyse certain elements of the mass media and popular arts, and to consider their roie in both reffecting and influencing modem Japanese society, it will feature a number of general themes or modules for analysis and discussion, dealing for example, with aspects of education, women and work, romance, and the greying of society, A selection of elements from mass media and populor arts film, TV documentaries, literature, joumalism, art and music will be used to review and evaluate the contemporary concems under discussion.
学修目標 As the majority of participants are expected be female, there will be a certain bias in several of the themes to be analysed toward issues regarding women in society and aspects of gender discrimination. It is hoped that participants will find this course both enlightening and interesting.
A week-by-week breakdown of the modules to be offered will be provided after the first day of class as there will depend on the choices agreed by the class.
講義計画 Participants will need to prepare for class conscientiously by reading, and occasionally providing, a nummber of texts, throughout the course, participants will be invited to give informed and well-presented opinions in both class discussion and through a number of written assignments.
I hope that the course will develop the abillty to analyse and respond to the various media elements that will be used to reinforce the topics under discussion. It is also intended that spoken and written expressions of opinion will benefit from the introduction of topic-related vocabulary lists.
評価方法 Participants will generally be graded on the following course requirements:
     conscientious class preparetion and participation;
     regular, punctual class attendance: should participants be consistently late, or absent
     three or more times from class, participants will not be able to erceive a final grade.
     one 600 word essay after completing each course topic; and a final examination( essay formal ).
A total of three essayseill be required for the semester and all essays submitted must be produced using a word processor. A passing grade cannot be given to anyone who falls short of fulfilling all of these grading requirements.
テキスト These will be provided by both participants and the instructor. Purchase of a text is not necessary.
