講義内容 The general plan of the course is to examine the various ways by which students can improve their writing skills, while at the same time learn how to do basic research on a chosen topic.
学修目標 The goal of this course is to become efficient in doing basic research on a given topic, in writing about it, and in giving oral presentations.
講義計画 Tuesday, April 10: Introduction: General explanation of the course, the textbooks, and the schedule. Do the exercise in Foundations of Writing(FW, vii-viii). Give assignments for next week.
April 17: FW, Chapter 1:“The Essay”
April 24: Chapter 2:“The Academic Writing Process”
May 8: Chapter 3:“The Research Paper”
May 15: This class will be used for Catching Up and Oral Presentations.
May 22: Chapter 4:“Main Ideas”
May 29: Chapter 5:“The Summarizing Process”
June 5: Chapter 6:“The Summary Report”
June 12: Catching Up and Oral Presentations
June 19: Chapter 7:“The Relationship Between Reading and Writing”
June 26: Chapter 8:“Preparing for a Cause-and-Effect Research Paper”
July 3: Chapter 9:“Writing an Introduction”
July 10: Chapter 10:“Writing a Conclusion”
July 17: Catching Up and Oral Presentations
End-of-the-term Essay: An essay of ten pages is required. The content should refer to one's basic scholarly interest. The essay is due on Friday, July 27.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on how well the students participate in the weekly assignments, the quality of the oral presentations, and that of the final essay. Regular attendance and coming to class on time will also be considered.

【その他】There may be some changes in the schedule as the course proceeds, but basically we hope to keep to the schedule as given above. Also, during the semester frequent references will be made to the book, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.
