授業概要 This course helps students gain basic translation skills in Japanese and English while nurturing intercultural understanding. Translation is an extremely useful skill when working for a company that conducts business with foreign clients. Translation, however, is not simply a linguistic skill but it requires a deep understanding of the clientユs socio-cultural background as well as their communication styles. In this course, students learn linguistic skills while paying attention to socio-cultural and communication issues. Students will first learn the importance of accuracy and then explore style differences. Students will also learn to examine "the context of the text," such as why and for whom it was written, the message intended by the writer as well as in what cultural context the text should be interpreted. This is an intensive and demanding course. Students are expected to take every task given with utmost seriousness. Further, studentsユ English competency needs to be sufficiently high in order to succeed in this class. (Obviously, a high and sophisticated ability in the Japanese language is also needed!) On the first day of class, there will be a quick test to check studentsユ English competency, based on which, recommendations on class registration are given.
