副題 Looking for Linguistic Fossils
授業概要 The English language has a history of more than one and a half millennia. As life forms leave traces of their existence in the form of fossils after they disappear, earlier forms of the language have left some traces in our speech today in the form of "linguistic fossils." By linguistic fossils, I mean linguistic traces such as morphological features or archaic grammatical constructions.
One of the most notable features of this kind would be word parts that can be shown to have come from various old languages. The fact that the vocabulary of English includes some items of Latin-origin may suggest that the language or the people who spoke it had some relationship with the Roman Empire in the distant past. The purpose of this course is to invite students to a field of linguistics known as historical linguistics, in which we study language from the historical perspective.
First, we learn certain basic notions in this course that are necessary for analyzing the English language from the perspective of historical linguistics. They include such notions, among others, as the difference between diachronic and synchronic studies and the basic knowledge of morphology and historical syntax. Following this study, we will look for linguistic fossils to learn how the English language has developed from its earlier forms, as well as how the people who used the language lived in earlier days.
学修目標 This course aims to introduce students to the intriguing world of historical linguistics.
