授業概要 This course makes use of history, sociology, and literature to investigate how peoples give voice to their struggle to make a living within a mixture of cultural influences. The emphasis will be on immigrants in America.
学修目標 The purpose of this course is to have Area Studies students realize that their major is not literature, or sociology, or history, or anthropology, etc., but that it is the study of a particular geographical/political area from the point of view of several disciplines. The interaction of several disciplines helps the students know the subject more thoroughly than through the focus of only one discipline.
授業計画 The lectures will first trace the history of various groups of people. Secondly a sociological analysis of neighborhoods will show the importance of these areas for the immigrants as they adapt to their new country. Finally, the voices of these people will be heard through the literature that tells their stories. In order to appreciate this immigrant experience and the reaction of the majority to their presence, class members will look into the various ethnic groups living in Japan.
評価方法 Grades will be assigned according to class attendance and participation, mid-term test, and short report.
テキスト Text: Mayer, David. The American Neighborhood Novel. Nagoya: University of Nagoya Press.
