副題 Language, society, and identity
授業概要 Building on the knowledge gained in my Bunkenkoudoku I, this course further analyses various aspects of the relationship between language, society and power. Once again, the focus in placed on reading academic texts written on sociolinguistics, and students are expected to learn to appreciate the act of reading academic texts as well as appreciate the information on the subject: the relationship between language, society, and power. This course should help the learner learn how to use language effectively as a way of understanding and persuading others so that they can function effectively as liaison persons and/or policy maker/implementers.

In addition to reading texts on sociolinguistics in English, students are expected to present opinions on the issues introduced in the text.

The primary language used in class is English. For clarification and/or explanation of complex phenomena, Japanese may be used.

Active class participation is required, NOT optional.
