| 授業概要 | What the instructor intends to do in this course is to survey US foreign policy issues, principles/doctrines, and practices in historical perspective, making every participant in this class will be able to think more about US "empire" now in an academic fashion. In addition, Japanユs relations with the United States are included in this course. By so doing, students will be given some ideas (1) to understand how the United States has been committing itself to the international community and (2) to easily understand how Japan has been dependent upon the United States, particularly since its defeat in the Asia-Pacific War. |
| 学修目標 | This class aims at giving several important ideas of America and Japan in World Politics, so that each student will possibly and hopefully get some knowledge to understand what World Politics has been in the past centuries and how Japan has been influenced by its surrounding political and security and economic developments, and get some insights into Japanユs future relations with some of the international community, specifically with neighboring nations. In this class, ENGLISH is to be used as much as possible. |
| 授業計画 | A dozen of topics of US foreign policy are to be taught in the following order: The French and Indian War (the Seven Yearsユ War) The War of Independence from Great Britain and Europe-centered World Politics The Republicユs Non-entangling Relations with European nations The road to, and the background of, the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 Events leading to the Continental Expansion and Manifest Destiny; the first chapter of US-Japan Relations The only US Civil War in the context of World Politics The Military Occupation of the South by the North after the Civil War The Spanish-American War: Overseas Expansion and another Manifest Destiny Turn-of-the-century US Foreign Policy toward Latin America & East Asia World War I and the League of Nations: Woodrow Wilsonユs America The way to the Kellogg Brian Treaty of 1928: Outlawry of War Pearl Harbor and the Pacific War, and World War II The End of World War II and the Origins of the Cold War in Europe The Japanese Pacific Constitution and the second chapter of US-Japan Relations The Cold War in East Asia in the 1950s ~1990s: US Policy toward Japan from Pacifism to "Pentagonization" The End of the Cold War in Europe, not in East Asia The Gulf War of 1990-91: US Primacy in World Politics The "War on Terrorism" and US Military Transformation on a global scale Japan in US Military Strategy in the early 2000s |
| 評価方法 | Based on class attendance, attitudes toward and commitment to class: 20%; midterm paper: 20%; and a final exam: 60%. |
