授業概要 How do forms of popular media represent and shape religion and religious ideas in different cultures? In what ways can religious groups and religious values influence popular media? Furthermore, how do the public as media consumers absorb, reflect, and influence representations of religion in media? In exploring some of the many different connections between media and religion, this course considers the impact of media on religious ideas and practices in contemporary societies.
学修目標 The aim of this course is to explore popular media representations of religion. Through using examples from film, television, and music, it considers the role of media in defining, influencing, and guiding religious ideas. Through working in pairs or groups, students will be encouraged to think critically about media texts and their role in cultural conversations about religion in different countries.
授業計画 This course includes lectures by the instructor, presentations of audio-visual material including films, and in-class group work.
評価方法 Assessment will include a combination of attendance and in-class activities, participation in classroom discussions, group studies and presentations, quizzes, and written reports spaced throughout the semester.
テキスト Students will be given materials by the instructor.
