副題 Developing Vocabulary and Analytical Skills
授業概要 This course is intended to encourage and assist students in strengthening their English vocabulary and in developing their analytical skills. It will require frequent and active use of all 4 main language skills.

Throughout the semester, participants will be presented with 3 topic 'modules' which will form the basis for language learning activities. These will focus, in particular, on vocabulary development and the analysis of various English language materials for discussion. These materials will be sourced from journalism, film, short stories, poetry, art and music. Discussion activities, both in pairs and in larger groups, will centre on an understanding and appreciation of these materials.

Topics for vocabulary acquisition and discussion have yet to be finalized, participants will be probably be offered some 3 to 4 topics during this semester each one lasting 4-5 weeks, and possibly including, among others, Values, Stresses and Tensions, and Finding Satisfaction.

In addition, some of the more common Latin and Greek word roots and prefixes of English-which can often give clues to the meaning of many new words-will be presented to the class. These will serve as a complement to the prefixes and word roots introduced to First-Year Workshop students.
学修目標 By the end of the semester lexical acquisition and understanding of word roots and prefixes should show considerable progress, as should conversational skills. Vocabulary and reading proficiency for the topics discussed in class should approach the standards required by Cambridge First Certificate.
It is hoped that this course will also acquaint students with a number of pertinent social issues and that though discussion and reading, they will develop their own sense of self and broaden their understanding of the issues under discussion.
授業計画 All classes will require analysis and discussion of a selection of materials from those introduced in the Course Outline.
