副題 Language, society, and identity
授業概要 Building on the knowledge gained in my Bunkenkoudoku I, this course further analyses various aspects of the relationship between language, society and power. Once again, the focus is placed on reading academic texts written on sociolinguistics, and students are expected to learn to appreciate the act of reading academic texts as well as appreciate the information on the subject: the relationship between language, society, and power. This course should help the student learn how to use language effectively as a way of understanding and persuading others so that they can function effectively as liaison persons and/or policy makers/implementers.

In addition to reading texts on sociolinguistics in English, students are expected to present opinions on the issues introduced in the text.

The primary language used in this class is English. For clarification and/or explanation of complex phenomena, Japanese may be used.

Active class participation is required, NOT optional.
学修目標 By the end of the semester, you will be able to do the following:
1. Read and understand relatively easy academic texts without hesitation
2. Critically analyze the text and form your own opinions
3. Present solid arguments on the issues discussed
4. Conduct a mini research study and write a report in English on the themes discussed in class
