授業概要 This course helps students gain basic interpreting skills in English and Japanese while nurturing intercultural understanding. Interpreting is an extremely useful skill when working for a company that conducts business with foreign clients. Interpreting, however, is not simply a linguistic skill but it requires a deep understanding of the clientユs socio-cultural background as well as their communication styles. In this course, students learn linguistic skills while paying attention to socio-cultural and communication issues. This is an intensive and demanding course. Further, studentsユ English competency needs to be sufficiently high in order to succeed in this class.
学修目標 By the end of the semester, you will:
1.know basic rules and expectations about interpreting
2.be able to use basic practice techniques such as shadowing, note-taking, summarizing, and retention.
3.be able to perform interpreting on several topics with reasonable fluency and accuracy.
4.be familiar with socio-cultural issues as they relate to interpreting contexts.
5.have learned useful vocabulary in several new areas such as politics and business negotiation.
6.learn generic communication mechanisms.
授業計画 授業は14週開講されます。
Week1:Test; What is interpreting--simultaneous/consecutive?; What are interpreting skills? What makes a good interpreter?
Week2-3:Note-taking and summarizing
Week4-5:Consecutive interpreting basics
Week6-7:Consecutive interpreting in casual contexts
Week8:Consecutive interpreting in business settings, speeches
Week9:Shadowing and retention
Week10-11:Simultaneous interpreting basics (sight-translation, etc.)
Week12:Whispering
Week13:Simple simultaneous interpreting on casual topics
Week14:Simple simultaneous interpreting on formal topics
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Vocabulary items from a particular area/industry will be given each week, which you will be tested on in the following weekユs class. You are also expected to practice interpreting on your own using newspaper articles,
National Public Radio broadcasts, etc.
Details will be provided by the instructor on the first day of class.
評価方法 Class participation: 40%
Quizzes: 30%
Final exam: 30%
