副題 Theoretical Linguistics
授業概要 This is an introductory level class that will focus on three core areas of theoretical linguistics. The first area, syntax, is the study of the way sentences and phrases are structured. We will be developing a simple theory of structure which includes rules for generating an initial structure combined with rules for moving parts of that structure around. The central focus of this part of the course will be on developing a theory that makes predictions about the acceptability of sentences and then testing those predictions. The second area, semantics, is the study of meaning. In this part of the course we will look at ways in which different sentences relate in terms of their meaning, and will develop a simple theory that can explain these relations. The third area, phonology, is the study of the way sounds are organized in language. We will look at several ways in which sounds change depending on the environment in which they occur and will develop and test rules for accounting for those changes.
学修目標 The main goal of this course is to get students to approach language from a scientific perspective. The focus will not be so much on learning the truth about syntax, semantics or phonology as it will be about learning how to get to the truth through standard scientific procedure.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Students will be expected to read about 15 pages of fairly difficult material every week. There will be two homework assignments for each of the three sections: syntax, semantics and phonology. There will also be
an in-class quiz on the last day of each section.
