副題 Literature and the British Empire: Postcolonial African Fiction in English
授業概要 We will examine the impact upon the peoples and cultures of Africa of the colonial encounter with Europe. We will start with postcolonial theory and the issues with which it is concerned we will examine a selection of short stories by representative Anglophone authors from various African countries. Examinations of the stories will be against the particular historic and cultural background of the country/cultural group concerned.
学修目標 The purpose of the course is three-fold: to teach the students to read fiction more perceptively and reflectively, noting in particular the relationship between the text and the historic and cultural context which produced it; to raise in the students a greater awareness of and appreciation for the peoples, cultures, and countries of Africa; and to gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of European colonialism for both the colonizer and the colonized.
