授業概要 The main purpose of this course is to present an example of humanistic study of TV programs produced in cultural contexts different to that of Japan. The students will examine both universal and idiosyncratic properties of humanities through discussions. The students will also become acquainted with cultures that are alien to them.
The Star Trek series, beginning with the Original (1966-69) followed by The Next Generation (1987-94), Deep Space 9 (1993-99), The Voyager (1995-2001), and ending with Enterprise (2001-2005), are a collection of American SF TV series that have been exceptionally popular on a global scale for over 40 years. In addition to the TV series, 6 movies based on the original series and 4 on The Next Generation have been released. In 2009, another movie, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the birth of the series, attracted a lot of new fans as well as old fans by introducing a perspective involving a time frame change, namely the change of history.
The uniqueness of the series lies in the diversity of issues that were dealt with in the dramas, such as language, races, religion, and ethics. The series offers viewers opportunities to consider various situations and sensitive matters that may occur at the time of the contact between heterogeneous cultures in a multicultural context. Issues including gender, minorities, theories of the universe, perspectives on other worlds, and considerations of time and space are also taken up in the series. Thus Star Trek provides viewers with fascinating material that can be studied from an interdisciplinary perspective. This course will focus on the side of humanities of the StarTrek series.
