授業概要 | What does it mean to be Australian? How have Australians been defined historically? How has British and American culture influenced Australians? Are there definable core values and ideals that can be said to be Australian? Do these apply to everyone, including recent immigrants, and do all Australians share, or want to share, these values and ideals? |
学修目標 | The object of this course is to introduce students to a range of historical and contemporary materials on debates concerning the shaping, development, and definitions of Australian identity. Issues that will be addressed will include British colonial heritage, indigenous heritage and dispossession, immigration, Americaユs cultural influence, and the notion of "Australia as a part of Asia." |
授業計画 | This course includes lectures by the instructor, presentations of audio-visual materials including films, and in-class group work. Week1:Introduction to the course; syllabus; self-introductions. 授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) | Instead of an exam, students must write four short reports based on reading. They must also read material before attending the class. |
評価方法 | Assessment will include a combination of attendance and in-class activities, participation in classroom discussions, group studies, presentations, and written reports spaced throughout the semester. Attendance 30%, Class participation 30%, written reports 40% |
