副題 Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Media Literacy
授業概要 In the current age, the amount of information available to us through traditional and new media is vast and ever-increasing. How do we learn how to understand the messages they receive? How do citizens living in a democracy access, analyze, and evaluate what they read and see? What creative techniques are used to attract or divert our attention from particular social issues? How do forms of popular media represent and shape society in different cultures? In exploring these questions, this course considers the impact of media and the importance of media literacy in contemporary societies.
学修目標 The aim of this course is to examine media literacy (“how to ‘read’ media) by using examples from film, television, and music. It considers forms of media, such as newspapers and the Internet, and looks at social issues such as human rights and religious values. Through working in pairs or groups, students will be encouraged to think critically about media texts and their role in cultural conversations in different countries.
授業計画 This course includes lectures by the instructor, presentations of audio-visual material including films, and in-class group work.
