副題 Language and Mind
授業概要 The purpose of this course is to encourage students to consider and analyze certain issues on competence and performance of human language. The subjects include Universal Grammar, Language Acquisition, Speech Errors, Reading Strategies, Dialect, and Wakamono-Kotoba.
学修目標 It is hoped that this course will not only acquaint the students with a number of modern linguistic issues but that it will encourage them to develop their ability to analyze the topics under review and to consider critically and theoretically based on the descriptive data. The course may serve as a steppingstone toward further academic pursuits and the analytic and scientific viewpoints of human language and mind.
授業計画 Students will be expected to prepare for class by reading the texts provided by the instructor, and occasionally, by producing materials for use in class. Throughout the course, students will be invited to give informed and well-presented opinions through both discussion and written assignments. Students may be asked to suggest topics for discussion, and to help in produce materials for use by the rest of the class. It is hoped that the course will develop the ability to analyze and respond critically to the various materials used to encourage discussion of the topics under review.
授業時間外の学習（準備学習など） Students prepare for the presentation using powerpoint, and present a short paper in the class.
評価方法 Students will be graded on the following course requirements: regular, punctual attendance; conscientious class preparation and participation; two squibs to be turned in related to selected course topics; and final examination (short paper format).
