【授業概要】

As in the previous semester, students will be introduced to reading strategies intended to reinforce and improve reading comprehension skills. They will be presented with a wide variety of international, native-level reading materials which will help prepare them for texts and tasks they may encounter in English-speaking environments. Vocabulary acquisition will be an integral feature of the course, and by the end of the year, students should be able to read and evaluate a wider range of texts with reduced dependence on a dictionary, and at a significantly improved rate and level of comprehension.

The text adopted for the course encourages young adult learners of English to build and enhance vocabulary and reading skills. Additional intensive and extensive reading exercises will be regularly assigned; class members will also have one of two different readers in this first semester, and will be encouraged to choose their own readers from a varied list for the second semester. Students will also be presented with tasks requiring them to appraise examples of journalism, poetry, music and classic art.

【学修目標】

As in the previous semester, the following elements of reading will be the principal features of the course:

surveying, predicting, skimming, scanning inferring, structuring;

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習等)】

Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. The instructor will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads. Weekly homework assignments will not generally exceed 90 minutes.

【評価方法】

This will be a particularly active course and attendance and participation are exceptionally important. Students’ participation and class preparation will informally evaluated in every lesson, with the instructor taking into account students’ efforts and progress in dealing with assignments involving the use of the class text and additional materials. Students can expect to be assessed on completion, presentation and quality of homework; and a final essay exam which will be related to reading materials covered during the semester. In general, the percentages would be as follows:

active class participation 40%;

vocabulary and reading homework 30%;

in-class vocabulary and reading assignments 10%

reader essay exam 20%.

A prefix and word root test will be given at the beginning and end of the semester to assess each student’s prefix acquisition level. Any change in the above percentages will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the semester. Self-evaluation will also be a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Late presentation of 3 or more homework assignments will seriously jeopardize a student’s chances of obtaining a grade higher than “C” for the semester. Missing more than 3 classes without due cause will seriously jeopardize a student’s chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester.
