【授業概要】

This is an English listening class which will use classic and popular Hollywood movies to teach American cultural content and English listening skills. Most of the class will focus on watching and then studying parts of these movies in class using dictation and teacher explanation.

【学修目標】

The primary goal of the class is to improve the student’s listening skill by exposing students to massive amounts of listening input by watching and studying four classic Hollywood movis in class and two more at home. In order to better prepare the student for this task, a textbook has been custom made for the class by the teacher and will be available for purchase at the beginning of the semester. In addition to helping the student improve their listening skill, the movies shown in class involve strong elements of American culture, sociology and history of the eras depicted in the films.

【授業計画】

1.Course introduction. Explain the rationale of extensive listening vs. intensive listening. Textbook will be available for purchase straight from the publisher.

2.The class will begin by starting Part 1 of The Wizard of Oz ( the most watched movie in history) in class.

3.Continue viewing the Wizard of Oz. The themes of agrarian vs. banking societies will be introduced.

4.Short discussion of Studio Era in class. Finish Wizard of Oz and discuss main themes of film.

5.Discuss Wizard of Oz movie report. Watch Wizard of Oz documentary. Begin with introduction of Civil War America and then introduction to the film Gone With the Wind.

6.Discuss slavery and other volatile issues of Gone with the Wind.

7.Continue Gone With the Wind. Hand in Singing in the Rain homework sheet.

8.Finish Gone With the Wind. Discuss ending and impact of film in general.

9.Discuss Gone with the Wind movie report in class. Begin introduction of World War Two Europe and the film Casablanca.

10Discuss appeal and mystery of black and white films. Continue Casablanca in class.

11Highlight dramatic skills of Bogart and Bergman. Finish Casablanca.

12Discuss Casablanca movie report in class. Introduce Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

13Continue Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Discuss stereotype of Mr. Yuniyoshi and the post-war image of Japanese in general.

14Finish Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Discuss emotive power of Moon River.

15Discuss Breakfast at Tiffany’s movie report. Hand in optional Citizen Kane movie report. Prepare for Mid-term examination.

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習等)】

Students will be expected to prepare for each class using the textbook. They will also need to write movie reports for each film outside of class. There will be two homework films and reports per semester.

Attendance: 15%, Surprise quizzes: 20%, Movie Reports 35%, Test: 30%
