【副 題】

What is language?

【授業概要】

Students will reflect on the relationship between language and culture, how each affects and changes the other. Using the ideas of Herbert Passin and others, students will study the nature of language, especially its grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, writing system, and how these are changing and evolving.

【学修目標】

By the end of the course students should have a clearer picture of what language is and how it is used, how languages vary and are similar, and their own language and its various components. The teacher also expects students to become active learners who search for the answers to questions themselves. The teacher wi11 not serve as the provider of answers, but as a guide to help students discover answers themselves.
