Using English to Learn about the Contemporary World

【授業概要】

In each cycle of research and presentation, small groups of students select topics offered by the teacher (or choose their own) and find appropriate readings. Groups analyse their readings, prepare vocabulary lists, and develop discussion questions. This material will then be copied by the teacher and given to the entire class for general discussion.

【学修目標】

The course encourages students to become independent, autonomous learners by asking them to find information, evaluate it, and present it to others.

1.Orientation to the course, formation of groups, design of group signs, preview of class activities

2.Overview of online information sources: world newspaper directories, Google searches, etc.

3.Topics for first cycle: Globalisation, Japanese identity (e.g., Imperial system), social problems (e.g., the homeless)

4.Groups bring readings to class and prepare vocabulary lists and discussion questions.

5.General discussion of group-generated readings and support material.

6.General discussion of group-generated readings and support material.

7.Topics for second cycle: movies, music, architecture, design, art

8.Groups bring readings to class and prepare vocabulary lists and discussion questions.
