授業概要 The aims of English I: Reading are to provide students with a variety of reading strategies to improve reading proficiency and promote a positive attitude for and competence in reading in English. Activities will include both extensive and intensive reading tasks using a variety of texts for improving student skills in surveying, predicting, skimming, scanning, inferring, and making connections with the readings.
学修目標 ● Preview an English text and make predictions about it
● Guess the meaning of words from context and make inferences.
● Read a section of text aloud with appropriate rhythm, word stress, and intonation.
● Identify a writerユs opinion or attitude.
● Evaluate information and opinions in readings for validity and logic.
● Read, understand, and discuss メauthenticモ articles on current issues (メauthentic,モ for the purpose of this document refers to materials that have been written without being simplified for EFL/ESL readers, such as those found in daily newspapers).
● Read, understand a novel without using a dictionary and are able to summarize chapters, identify important passages, connect the readings with other literature/stories, and connect the book in some way to their own lives or events and issues in the world in general.
● Read and understand designated texts at a rate of 130 words per minute or faster.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Students are expected to reading a novel over the course of the entire semester for homework and prepare notes for discussion at the beginning of every class.
評価方法 ● 6 Unit Vocabulary Quizzes - 75% - 12.5% for each quiz; late or absent students receive 0%.
● Book Report - 25% - Late or no report = X

その他 Homework & Participation - 15% - 1% for each class, but 0% if student is late, sleeping, using his/her phone, using Japanese, does not do homework or generally not participating. Early leave, late 3 times, or late for more than 15 minutes = 1 absence.
欠席と成績評価: 欠席は4回に達した段階でF(不合格)評価がつく。また、授業数の3分の1を超えて欠席がある場合、評価はS(欠席過多)となる。
If you miss 4 classes, you will get an F.
