授業概要 This course will help students develop their writing ability in English. Classes will include a variety of writing tasks which will include sentence-combining activities, grammar lessons, writing letters, paragraphs and short essays over a range of topics of life issues to help students write clearly and effectively. Each student will submit a writing portfolio of their work at the end of the semester.
学修目標 ● Use a variety of pre-writing techniques such as lists and mind maps.
● Write formal letters.
● Write a multiple-paragraph essay (300+ words) on a general or personal topic.
● Use the conventions for specific writing genres such as narration, description, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, evaluation and persuasion.
● Understand basic vocabulary associated with writing (e.g. thesis, paragraph, topic sentence).
● Write basic sentence patterns with coordination and subordination with accuracy.
● Recognize and use transitional cues.
● Follow basic typing conventions.

授業時間外の学習（準備学習など） Students are expected to finish some of the longer assignments in the textbook at home including the composition of all three drafts in the writing process of each unit and prepare a portfolio of their work at the end of the term.
評価方法 ● ５ Works - 50% - 10% for each work; -１% for each class any draft (１st, ２nd or ３rd) is late.
● ２ Quizzes - 25% - 12.5% for each; late or absent students receive 0%.
● Portfolio/Report - 25% - Late or no report = X

その他 Homework & Participation - 15% - 1% for each class, but 0% if student is late, sleeping, using his/her phone, using Japanese, does not have homework or generally not participating. Early leave, late ３ times, or late for more than 15 minutes = １ absence.
欠席と成績評価：　欠席は４回に達した段階でF（不合格）評価がつく。また、授業数の３分の１を超えて欠席がある場合、評価はS（欠席過多）となる。
If you miss ４ classes, you will get an F.
