授業概要 Students will start by learning the basic structure of a presentation and how to manipulate it. They will then learn rhetorical skills and how to utilize their voice so as to better express themselves and become more persuasive.
学修目標 1. Learn the basic structure of a presentation
2. Learn how to vary your voice by using stress, intonation, pacing and chunking
3. Learn key presentation language such as signposting and how to focus
4. Use rhetorical devices to become more persuasive, such as contrasts, tripling, knock downs, rhetorical questions, and repeating
5. Be able to deal with unexpected problems which might arise during the presentation
6. Be able to successfully deliver a 5-10 minute academic presentation
7. Become familiar with PowerPoint
授業計画 1. Course introductions, syllabus, Section 1: Getting started (purpose and openings)
2. Section 1: Getting started (signposts and survival tactics)
3. Section 3: Using your voice (articulation, chunking and stress)
4. Section 3: Using your voice (pacing, intonation and sound scripting)
5. 1st Presentation
6. Section 4: Basic techniques (emphasis and intensifiers)
7. Section 4: Basic techniques (softening and repetition)
8. Section 5: Further techniques (rhetorical questions, contrasts and tripling)
9. 2nd Presentation
10. Section 5: Further techniques (machine gunning, knock downs and rapport)
11. Section 6: Key language (formality)
12. Section 7: Handling questions (dealing with questions)
13. Using visuals and how to use PowerPoint
14. Section 2: Exploiting visuals (change and development)
15. Final presentation (Final report to be submitted at a later date)
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Students are expected to practice the new skills learnt each week, at home and in other classes. Significant time will also be spent on preparing for the three presentations.
評価方法 Participation 20%, 1st Presentation 20%, 2nd Presentation 25%
Final presentation and Final report 35%

その他 Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly. Students who miss 4 classes will receive an F. Students who fail to do the Final presentation or submit the Final report by the deadline will receive an X.
