授業概要 This course will reinforce and build on the writing skills acquired in Writing I, & II, and the instructor will introduce a number of writing techniques and language forms common to major, rhetorical styles of essay writing at university level.
学修目標 The course will focus primarily on a methodical organization of content and style, rather than grammar. Students will be encouraged to attain a level of academic written proficiency that will enable them to express their ideas coherently and elegantly at a level between the Council of Europeユs language competency level B2 (Independent User) or C1 (Competent User) (The TOEFL paper-test range equivalent would be 550-627). The course will also serve to prepare students for the academic writing requirements of their seminar directors and, where applicable, study abroad.
授業計画 The principal objective of this semester is to provide students with in-depth instruction that will enable them to produce a well-written and appropriately structured five paragraph essay in both of the rhetorical styles referred to below. Additionally, students will be provided with an extensive introduction to research paper writing skills, and will be required to produce one APA formatted 1200-word chapter and present it as part of a collated group research paper by the end of the semester.

Classes 1 - 6 : The Process - Analysis essay; Writing a Research Paper 1
Classes 7 - 12 : The Cause and Effect essay; Writing a Research Paper 1
Classes 13 - 15 : Review and additional writing assignments; Writing a Research Paper 1

Throughout the semester all students will be instructed in how to present papers that feature:
an appropriate introductory paragraph with hook and thesis sentence
appropriate body paragraphs with topic sentences, support and citations (where applicable)
an appropriate concluding paragraph with brief summary of main points and final statement
a bibliography (where applicable)

The instructor will also provide advice regarding:
use of articles; use of MS Word spellchecker tool; use of MS Word thesaurus tool; usage of discourse markers used in academic writing; usage of internal referencing ('signposting'); MS Word command shortcuts via keyboard; peer-editing; complementary internet resources for academic writing; and the use of Hodgesユ Harbrace Handbook as a reference source

Additionally, students will be expected to provide the instructor with at least 2 drafts of each assignment, and to show that they have understood and incorporated suggested amendments and improvements. Students will receive feedback regarding their efforts with particular regard to essay organization, sentence structure, language and usage, punctuation and frequent errors.

With regard to Research Paper Writing 1, students will be advised on the following stages of
writing a research paper: essential differences between APA and MLA formats in research paper
writing; topic selection; developing an outline; writing a bibliography; reviewing online and print
resources; incorporating citations and quotations; accessing complementary internet resources; revising,
editing, peer-editing and proof-reading.

Students will receive feedback regarding their efforts with particular regard to essay organization, sentence structure, language and usage, punctuation and frequent errors.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. The Instructor will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on a continuous assessment of a studentユs work and effort in class, and will take into account the grades given for the various assignments during the semester and the grade given for research paper presentation.
Grade for Process - Analysis essay 20%
Grade for Cause and Effect essay 20%
Completion and quality of additional assignments 40%
    Research Paper 20%
Any change in the above percentages will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the semester. Self-evaluation will also be a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Absence from more than 2 classes will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester. Late presentation of 3 or more homework assignments will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a grade higher than メCモ for the semester.
