授業概要 This course will reinforce and build on the writing skills acquired in Writing I & II, and instructors will introduce a number of writing techniques and language forms common to major, rhetorical styles of essay writing at university level.
学修目標 The course will focus primarily on a methodical organization of content and style, rather than grammar. Students will be encouraged to attain a level of academic written proficiency that will enable them to express their ideas coherently and elegantly at a level between the Council of Europeユs language competency level B1 (Threshold User), or B2 (Independent User) (The TOEFL paper-test range equivalent would be 450-550). The course will also serve to prepare students for the academic writing requirements of their seminar directors and if applicable, study abroad.
授業計画 The principal objective of this semester is to provide students with in-depth instruction that will enable them to produce a well-written and appropriately structured five paragraph essay for both of the following rhetorical styles:

Classes 1 - 6 : The Process - Analysis essay
Classes 7 - 12 : The Cause and Effect essay
Classes 13 - 15 : Review and additional writing assignments

Circumstances permitting, instructors may require students to complete a Classification and / or a Reaction essay in addition to the previously mentioned essays should time permit. Throughout the semester all students will be instructed in how to present papers that feature:
an appropriate introductory paragraph with hook and thesis sentence
appropriate body paragraphs with topic sentences, support and citations (where applicable)
an appropriate concluding paragraph with brief summary of main points and final statement
    a bibliography (where applicable)

Additionally, students will be expected to provide instructors with at least 2 drafts of each assignment, and to show that they have understood and incorporated suggested amendments and improvements. Students will receive feedback regarding their efforts with particular regard to essay organization, sentence structure, language and usage, punctuation and frequent errors.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. Instructors will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on a continuous assessment of a studentユs work and effort in class, and will take into account the grades given for the various essay and homework assignments during the semester.

Grade for The Process - Analysis essay 35%
Grade for The Cause and Effect essay 35%
Completion and quality of additional assignments: 30%

Any change in this grading system will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the semester. Self-evaluation will also be a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Absence from more than 2 classes will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester. Late presentation of 3 or more homework assignments will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a grade higher than メCモ for the semester.
テキスト The text to be used by all instructors will be Effective Academic Writing 3 by J. Davis & R. Liss (OUP).
