At present, the following courses will be on offer during the coming semester:

Popular Music and Entertainment from a Historical Perspective (R Hewer)
Human Rights and Comic Books (V Y Tee)

Workshop topics are being constantly updated and additional courses may also be offered. Students will be informed should any changes be made to this syllabus.
授業概要 As in previous semesters, the purpose of a Workshop class is to provide students with a seven- or eight-week introduction to a variety of subjects that it is hoped they will find appealing and useful. The methodology is based on the principle of sheltered learning whereby the instructors will introduce new content, usually distinct from the subject matter presented in conventional language skill courses. The learning activities and material offered in the Workshop courses will vary from semester to semester as the content will depend on the interests of the instructors imparting these courses.
学修目標 The course follows the general format of WorkshopIIIand will present a variety of teaching and learning styles to complement those offered in previous semesters. A major objective is to show students why we are interested in these topics and to make them interested in these topics as well as well as to encourage students to reinforce and enhance their language skills by way of content material presented entirely in English.
授業計画 WorkshopIVwill be split into a seven-week section and an eight-week section for the semester. The last class of the semester, メClass 15モ, will provide a for general conclusion and reflection on WorkshopsIIIandIV, and a questionnaire will be provided for feedback about the Workshop programme overall. All instructors will present students with a weekly schedule at the beginning of their course and this will give specific and detailed information regarding class content and assignments.

The first-named instructor will teach a 7-week Workshop course from:
    Thursday, September 22nd — November 10th.
The second-named instructor will teach an 8-week Workshop course from
    Thursday, October 17th, — January 19th.

Although each instructor will provide a specific schedule for the content of their particular Workshop course, Workshop classes for this semester will follow this general pattern,

Instructor1
Weeks1 - 6: Introduction to Workshop course; Workshop assignments and class content.
Week7: Final topic activities, and quizzes, reports,or presentations.

Instructor2
Week8 - 13. Introduction to Workshop course; Workshop assignments and class content.
Week14: Final topic activities, and quizzes, reports or presentations.
Week15: Overall Review of Workshops III&IV, and the Workshop programme.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) As in the previous semester, study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the course and on the assignment. Instructors will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads.
評価方法 Student evaluations and how these will be carried out will vary, as in the previous semester, from instructor to instructor according to the demands and structure of a particular Workshop course. Each instructor will provide students with a comprehensive outline of grading procedures at the beginning of the course. In general, however, all evaluation will depend, to a large extent on a studentユs application and diligence and on the appropriate and timely completion of assignments given during the duration of the Workshop. In the past, students have been graded according to the following general principle:
    Grades for homework assignments 50%
Participation and completion of other assignments: 50%
Self-evaluation is also a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Absence from more than 3 classes per semester will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester. Late presentation of 3 or more homework assignments will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a grade higher than メCモ for the semester. Final grades for each student will be decided on in consultation and collaboration with the instructors who share students during a particular semester. Any change in these percentages or stipulations will be communicated to students at the beginning of each course.
テキスト Materials will be provided by the instructors, as will details regarding purchase of notebooks etc.
