授業概要 At present, the Department is in the process of updating and improving this course and new materials are being considered for adoption. The new program will reinforce and build on the language skills acquired in Communication in English I. During the semester, classes will review a number of themes or topics for discussion. Each module will be comprised of a number of activities that will lead toward a major discussion activity. These will be based on in-depth considerations of current social issues and are designed to facilitate language development in all major skill areas, but especially those with regard to listening and discussion.
学修目標 Students will be encouraged to attain a level of oral proficiency that will enable them to express their ideas coherently and elegantly at a level between the Council of Europeユs language competency level B1 (Threshold User), or B2 (Independent User) (The TOEFL paper-test range equivalent would be 450ミ550). The course will focus primarily on developing the following aspects of language development:
Fluency strategies help learners develop effective, advanced conversation skills.
Critical thinking activities to encourage learners to think deeply about how they express themselves in English.
Useful expressions and vocabulary (AWL-based) to enable learners interact more freely in speaking activities.
Additional activities will provide reinforcement and extension activities for vocabulary, grammar, conversation strategies, and critical thinking.
Audio and video activities will be provided in conjunction with Language Laboratory (LL) instructors in order to enhance and develop listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills for to a high intermediate level. A variety of listening and video material will provide an opportunity for recognition of different speaking styles, as well as in-depth understanding of the topics under discussion from multiple perspectives. These will depend on authentic interviews, mini-lectures, and other dialogues to provide a context for developing listening strategies appropriate for a learner at high intermediate level.
The course will also serve to prepare students for the oral communication requirements of their seminar directors and, if applicable, study abroad.
授業計画 As noted previously, the course is in the process of being updated, yet it is intended that a number of themes or topics for discussion will be presented during the semester. In the past, these have included modules on Food Safety, Anorexia, News Reporting, and Drug Control. Some of these topics may also feature in the new syllabus, while other possible additions may include the Media and Society and Crime. The following is a provisional teaching schedule, subject to confirmation.
Weeks1 - 3: Introduction to CiEII& Anorexia
Weeks4 - 6: News Reporting & Media and Society
Weeks7 - 9: Media and Society & Crime; LL Test 1
Weeks10 - 12: Crime & Drug Control
Weeks13 - 14: Class presentation preparation activities
Week15: Review of CiEII; Class Presentations; LL Test 2
In Week 15 students will be required to give group presentations in the form of poster sessions or PowerPoint slides to members from their own and other CiE classes. These will be based on materials and topics covered during the year.
Students will be informed at the beginning of the semester about the choice of text and about the modules or topics that will be covered throughout the semester.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. Students can expect to spend 5 hours a week preparing assignments for class or the LL, and instructors will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete. They will ensure that students are not given excessive, combined workloads from LL and CiE instructors.
評価方法 CiE is a particularly active course and attendance and participation are exceptionally important. Studentsユ participation and class preparation are informally evaluated in every lesson, with instructors taking into account studentsユ efforts and progress in dealing with assignments involving the use of the class text and additional materials. Students can expect to be assessed on the results of LL tests; completion, presentation and quality of homework; and a final CiE exam which will have an oral and vocabulary component and which will be based on materials covered during the semester. In general, the percentages would be as follows:
Completion and quality of LL assignments; test results 50%
Completion and quality of CiE assignments 50%
Any change in the above percentages will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the semester. Students will need to pass both LL and CiE sections of the course in order to obtain a credit. Self-evaluation will also be a feature of the course, and students will be required to provide feedback on the program at the end of the semester. Missing more than 6 classes will seriously jeopardize a studentユs chances of obtaining a passing grade for the semester.
テキスト New publications containing updated and improved course materials may mean that the text will be changed before the beginning of the academic year. At present, however, it is being suggested that the text to be used by all instructors during Semesters 1 &IIwill be Academic Listening Encounters: Life in Society by J. Sanabria (CUP).
