授業概要 This course is in the process of being updated and enhanced therefore what follows are tentative outlines and objectives that will be confirmed or otherwise at the beginning of the semester.

This course will reinforce and build on the reading skills acquired in previous semesters, and instructors will require students to work on reading strategies that will enable them to develop the skills needed for successful reading comprehension at a level between the Council of Europeユs language competency level B1 (Threshold User) and B2 (Independent User) (The TOEFL paper-test range equivalent would be 450 - 550). The course will also serve to prepare students for the academic reading requirements of their seminar directors and if applicable, study abroad.
学修目標 First-year Reading classes are taught by NEEC. The course objectives for Reading II should therefore reinforce and extend the scope of reading objectives presented in earlier NEEC courses, namely:
     reading to search for basic information; reading to skim quickly; reading to learn from texts;
reading to integrate information and reading to critique texts.

The reading materials and activities for this course will reinforce the reading strategies, both intensive and extensive, already introduced previously, and will further develop the following reading skill areas:
extracting main ideas from a text; reading for specific information; understanding text organization; predicting; checking comprehension; inferring; dealing with unfamiliar words; linking ideas; understanding complex sentences; understanding a writerユs style; evaluating a text; reacting to the text; and writing summaries.
These texts will complement those being used for Communication in English II so that similar themes and topics will be covered so that vocabulary and other EFL learning strategies may be recyled and reinforced.

Instructors will also be asked to provide guidance in developing skills required for:
reading for research (searching for information needed for writing; e.g. for research papers)
reading for general comprehension (academic texts)
reading for general comprehension (reading for pleasure)

Vocabulary acquisition is a vital element in the enhancing of reading skills, and is an integral feature of the course. By the end of the year students should be able to read a wide range of texts with a reduced dependence on a dictionary, and at a significantly improved rate and level of comprehension. In addition dependence on a dictionary, and at a significantly improved rate and level of comprehension. In addition to the integrated vocabulary exercises contained in the reading text chosen by the instructor, students should be encouraged to acquire the most frequent lexical items from Averil Coxheadユs Academic Work List.

As noted previously, NEEC instructors are currently piloting the teaching of a number of word families from the Academic Word List in some of their classes. Depending on the results achieved and their recommendations, instructors in Reading I may thus be asked to teach students the subsequent sets of AWL headwords:
     Semester 2: Groups 7 - 8 120 words

Extensive reading is an important part of the NEEC program, with a required read of a minimum number of 5 graded readers per semester. As part of their extensive reading tasks, Reading II students will also be asked to read at least 2 graded readers each semester from a list of readers to be provided during the first week of class.
授業計画 As the course is in the process of being updated with new publications that are about to be trialed it is not possible to specify, at present, the specific materials that will be covered in each class. These will, of course, be made known to the students by the beginning of the semester. As mentioned previously, the texts being proposed for Reading II will complement those being used for Communication in English II so that similar themes and topics will be covered and EFL learning strategies recyled and reinforced.

Possible themes from the text and related reading activities may be presented as follows:
Classes 1 - 5 : Intelligence 2; Extensive Reading 1
Classes 6 - 10 : Nonverbal Messages; Extensive Reading 1/2
Classes 11 - 15 : Interpersonal Relationships; Extensive Reading 2
This basic schedule and teaching outline will be updated once trialing and methodology are agreed upon during the present updating process and students will be informed in detail about the syllabus at the beginning of the semester.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習など) Study and preparation outside of class will vary from week to week depending on the assignment. Instructors will give adequate notice of any due assignments as well as advice on how long they will take to complete, and will ensure that students are not given excessive workloads.
評価方法 Evaluation will be based on a continuous assessment of a studentユs work and effort in class, and will take into account the grades given for the various assignments during the semester. In general, it is being proposed that in common with NEEC evaluation policy students will be assessed as follows:
Class participation 20%; Homework 40% ; Vocabulary quizzes; class assignments 20%
Final reading report 20%. Missing 4 classes will result in an F grade.
テキスト At present, the following text is being considered for use throughout both semesters:
Academic Encounters: Human Behavior by B. Seal (CUP). It is a companion text to Academic Encounters: Life in Society by K. Brown & S. Hood (CUP) that is being proposed for Communication in English II. Any change in text will be communicated to students before Semester 2.
